Igneous texture

Porphyritic texture

A distinct difference in crystal size: larger crystals (phenocrysts) in a finer groundmass.

What it means

Slow cooling at depth grows the large crystals, then rapid cooling at shallower depth or on eruption forms the fine groundmass.

Where to look for it

Common in volcanic rocks such as andesite and basalt
