Herringbone cross-stratification
Stacked cross-bed sets that dip in opposite directions, resembling a fish skeleton.
- How it forms
- Currents that reverse direction, building cross-beds that dip one way, then the other.
- Typical setting
- Tidal flats and tidal channels (uncommon, since it needs roughly equal currents both ways)
- Way up
- Same as cross-bedding.
- Flow direction
- Shows two opposite flow directions.
