Calcareous algae in thin section

Red algae form magnesian-calcite crusts, nodules and branches with a rectangular or rounded cellular pattern; micritized fragments look dark brown and opaque. Green algae calcify within their tissues (for example the dasyclad Mizzia, a Permian marine green alga). Calcispheres are small hollow spheres, possibly algal.
