Bryozoans in thin section

Colonial, calcareous animals that encrust, branch or form lacy (fenestrate) sheets. Identified by wall structure and the arrangement of zooecia (the small chambers); laminated walls are distinctive in thin section. They resemble corals but have much smaller openings, typically under 1 mm. Mostly calcite, some aragonite.
